MOTHER BELIEVES ALL IS POSSIBLE

Margarita Mendez was 50 when she learned she was pregnant. Twenty years younger than his wife, Oracio Mendez was ready to be a father. The couple thought of what would make the pregnancy work and the endless reasons why they should not go through with it, but embracing the little bundle of joy was greater than all the fear they felt.
“We wanted a family, and that’s what we got,” Ms. Mendez said with a smile.

The Mendez couple embarked on the journey of parenthood while living in New Jersey.
“The weather was very cold, and my immune system was frail I guess,” she said as she sipped her coffee.
Ms. Mendez’s health condition threatened the pregnancy and the doctor determined the pregnancy was high-risk. She was concerned because the baby was also exposed to developing asthma.
“I was really scared because I wanted the baby to be okay. I knew that I had to follow the doctor’s orders to protect my baby,” Ms. Mendez said.
The couple did everything as instructed throughout the full term of the pregnancy, but the unexpected happened. The major downfall was when the doctor told the couple there was a 70% chance Ms. Mendez would survive the procedure.
“I burst into tears as the doctor gave us the devastating news. How could that be happening to us I thought,” said Ms. Mendez holding her husband’s hand.
The couple had to decide what they were going to do, but after short deliberation there was no doubt they wanted the baby.
“The nurses sat my wife on a wheelchair and took her to the fourth floor where they prepped her to deliver,” he said nodding. “I was so nervous I bit every single nail from my left hand.”

Things got complicated in the delivery room. As the couple recalls, the doctor wasn’t very optimistic, but after six hours of hard labor a baby girl was born.
“I am a dancer at heart. I love salsa and merengue,” Martha Mendez said putting her hands on her waist and shaking her shoulders.
She likes to play volleyball and is in the cheerleading team in her school. She practices twice a week during the afternoon.

“My mother has a genuine love for plants,” she said. “We had a pretty garden in front of the house, but it got destroyed because of some construction work.”
The “trilogy” as they call themselves leads a normal life. Despite her age, Margarita tries hard to understand her daughter and the personality she is developing.
“As parents we are challenged on a daily basis,” she said. “Times have changed and we need to evolve with it to meet our daughter’s needs and expectations.”
According to Ms. Mendez, her daughter is a tranquil child. She said they are happy their daughter is not thinking about boys yet.
“We are constantly trying to develop ideas and activities that can keep our daughter busy,” she said. “I am really concerned with the way kids handle themselves today.”
Mr. Mendez said talking is the key in order to maintain a close relationship with his daughter.
“I talk to her about everything,” he said. “Sex, drugs, boys, etc.”
To encourage Martha to do well in school, the couple plans a trip to a resort every year.
“The trip strategy is the best one,” Ms. Mendez said. “I kill two birds with one stone, my daughter does great in school and I get a well deserved break.”
